World War 1, foreseen as a short, economically refreshing war, soon turned into one of long- drawn attrition. Germany's exalted Schlieffen Plan failed, their underestimation of the French and British costing them Paris. Germany needed to pause and regroup, which gave France just enough time to set up a defensive trench system, greatly benefiting from new technologies. Then, both parties took a defensive stance and no one was gaining ground. Until someone could develop machinery that could plow through enemy lines, the war would trail on.
